CDR Romuel “Roy” B. Nafarrete, the son of a retired Chief Warrant Officer, grew up in National City, CA. He graduated with Merit from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, with a B.S. in Economics. His first assignment was at Navy Recruiting District, San Diego as an Officer Recruiter. After three months, he transferred to Surface Warfare Officer School in Coronado, CA. His first operational assignment was onboard the destroyer, USS HARRY W HILL (DD 986), where he served as the CIC Officer, ASW Officer and Electrical Officer. After three years on HILL, Roy transferred to Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center (FLTASWTC), where he served as a tactical instructor.
At FLTASWTC, CDR Nafarrete re-designated as a Fleet Support Officer (later Human Resources Officer) and took on the job as the Enlisted Training Department Head. He then reported to Navy Recruiting District, San Diego as the Enlisted Programs Officer. During his three year tenure, NRD San Diego earned national “District of the Year” honors for three consecutive years.
After earning an M.S. from the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CDR Nafarrete reported to the aircraft carrier USS JOHN C STENNIS, homeported in San Diego. He served as the Training Officer. He deployed onboard the USS STENNIS in support of Operation NOBLE EAGLE. He then transferred to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, where he worked for the Chief of Naval Personnel in the N12 (Requirements) Directorate. Prior to reporting to the Office of Chief of Naval Personnel, CDR Nafarrete’s most recently served as the Commanding Officer of Navy Recruiting District, San Francisco.
CDR Nafarrete has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards) , the Navy and Marine Commendation Medal (4 awards), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4 awards). In addition to his B.S. and M.S., he has also earned an M.S. in Education and a Doctorate in Management.
CDR Nafarrete and his wife, Jennifer, have two children, Kai (8) and Jaclyn (5). They reside in Alexandria, VA.
